Welcome

Welcome! You’ve found the website of the Jubilee Justice Committee of  Grace Congregational United Church of Christ in Rutland, Vermont. Our committee is devoted to educating members of our congregation on issues of social, political and economic justice in America, in light of our faith.

Our name comes from the Old Testament book of Leviticus: “And you shall hallow the fiftieth year and you shall proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you…” (Leviticus 25:10 NRSV) In this, the third book of the Old Testament, the concept of the social covenant was laid out, and at its center was the ideal of justice, righteousness, through a fair distribution of the nation’s wealth; in the jubilee year, debts would be forgiven, property returned to its rightful owners– property originally fairly distributed among the families of the twelve tribes. The Jubilee was a vision of a limit set upon the amassing of wealth. Jubilee Justice was set in the context of laws to ensure the fair treatment of widows, children, servants and the poor. The Old Testament prophets served to remind God’s people that worship doesn’t mean offerings and rituals, but caring for one another, and especially, those most vulnerable.

Our Jubilee Justice Committee at Grace Church is charged with informing and empowering our members to look at our world through God’s eyes and see where there are issues of justice that we might otherwise overlook as we go about our daily lives. We choose to do this by focusing on a small number of challenging issues over a period of time, allowing for our understanding to go deeper. This website is one tool that we seek to develop to help us with this work. On each page you will find information we have gathered to be of help to you in exploring questions of justice within an area of focus. We aim to update these frequently and to add to our pages as we explore new issues.

If you have information you would like to add, or questions for us, please contact us at gracejubileejustice@gmail.com.
